Exploring Common Misconceptions about Gallstones and Gallbladder Disease
Gallbladder Cancer
When some patients are diagnosed with gallstones, they become concerned about the possibility of gallbladder cancer. In short, there is no definitive link between gallstones and gallbladder cancer. Gallstones are a very common condition, while gallbladder cancer is very rare. However, because of the often asymptomatic nature of gallbladder cancer, it is commonly diagnosed at a later stage with serious ramifications. If you are experiencing any pain in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen this should be evaluated sooner rather later.
There is some data to suggest that particularly large gallstones may increase the relative risk of gallbladder cancer slightly. However, the overall risk of developing gallbladder cancer remains extremely low.
Weight Regain after Surgery
Some patients may also be concerned about gaining weight after gallbladder surgery. Once again, there is no evidence that removing the gallbladder causes any kind of weight gain in-and-of-itself. However, do remember that symptoms of gallbladder disease are self-limiting as it relates to overeating high-fat foods. Therefore, patients experiencing gallbladder disease symptoms are often limiting their intake of less-healthy food and drinks. After surgery, patients are better able to tolerate high-fat foods and large meals, which may lead to weight gain if they are not careful with their caloric intake.
Gallbladder Flush Diets
A note about supplements or diets claiming to flush gallstones. There is no supplement or diet that has been proven or that has shown any promise of eliminating gallstones. Please do not ignore abdominal pain. Seeing a qualified physician or surgeon for a proper diagnosis as soon as possible.
